Why do some radar level gauges come without a horn antenna while others include one? This article will reveal the answer for you.

First, we need to understand how radar level gauges work.

A radar level gauge is a non-contact measurement device.

Its antenna emits high-frequency, short-pulse microwave signals in the form of a beam. These microwave signals travel at the speed of light through space. [Signal Transmission]

When the microwave signals encounter the surface of a medium, they reflect with varying intensities depending on the dielectric constant and other characteristics of the medium's surface. (Generally, the higher the dielectric constant, the stronger the reflected signal.)[Signal Reflection]

After the receiving antenna captures the reflected signal, the radar level gauge's internal microprocessor analyzes the strength, shape, and other characteristics of the reflected signal. By combining this data with known medium properties and device parameters, it accurately identifies and determines the height of the liquid level.[Signal Analysis]

During this process, the horn antenna serves the following functions:

1. Signal Focusing and Enhancement

The horn antenna acts like an optical lens, focusing the microwave signals emitted by the radar. This concentrates the signals toward the target area, reducing scattering and attenuation during propagation. The concentrated signal energy enhances signal strength and stability, thereby improving measurement precision and accuracy. For example, when measuring liquid levels in large storage tanks, the horn ensures better coverage of the liquid surface.

2. Expanding Signal Reception Range

When measuring special media such as high-viscosity liquids or liquids with solid particles, ordinary radar level gauges may struggle. The horn antenna can expand the signal reception range, allowing the signal to better penetrate the liquid surface and reducing interference from solid particles. For instance, when measuring slurry or suspension levels, it effectively captures reflected signals.

For media with low dielectric constants (such as light oil or liquefied gas), the horn antenna significantly enhances signal reflection strength, ensuring measurement accuracy.

3. Reducing Interference

The horn antenna effectively minimizes interference from condensate, steam, and other factors. It also helps avoid obstacles inside the container (such as agitators or pipes). In environments with significant temperature variations or steam, such as dome tanks or internal floating roof tanks, the horn antenna allows radar waves to be transmitted and received at specific angles, reducing the impact of condensate on signal reflection and scattering, thereby improving liquid level measurement accuracy.

4. Adapting to Special and Complex Conditions

1) For measuring corrosive or high-temperature, high-pressure liquids, the horn antenna reduces direct contact between the radar level gauge and the medium, preventing equipment corrosion and extending its service life while ensuring measurement accuracy. For example, when measuring strong acids, alkalis, or high-temperature, high-pressure chemical raw materials, the horn antenna protects the equipment.

2) Suitable for Long-Distance Measurement: In large storage tanks or deep wells, the horn antenna helps radar waves propagate over longer distances, ensuring the signal reaches the liquid surface and reflects back.

3) Reducing Dust and Steam Interference: In environments with dust, steam, or foam, the horn antenna minimizes interference from these factors, improving measurement stability.

5. Flexible Installation and Convenient Use

1) The horn antenna is relatively simple to install and typically does not require auxiliary facilities like guide wave tubes, reducing installation costs and simplifying maintenance.

2) The shape and size of the horn antenna can be designed according to different measurement needs and installation environments, allowing it to adapt to various installation angles and positions. This ensures the radar waves are transmitted and received at the optimal angle, enhancing the level gauge's applicability and flexibility.

3) The horn antenna helps calibrate the radar wave's transmission direction, reducing measurement errors caused by improper installation.

Typical Application Scenarios

Large Storage Tanks:

Such as petroleum or chemical storage tanks requiring long-distance and high-precision liquid level measurement.

Low Dielectric Constant Media:

Such as liquefied natural gas (LNG) or light oil.

Complex Conditions:

Such as environments with high temperature, high pressure, dust, steam, or foam.

Summary

As the above analysis shows, the primary purpose of a radar level gauge with a horn antenna is to focus radar waves, enhance signal strength, and reduce interference, thereby improving measurement accuracy, stability, and adaptability. This design is particularly suitable for complex conditions and long-distance measurement scenarios. If your application environment has the aforementioned requirements, choosing a radar level gauge with a horn antenna would be an ideal choice.
